Thorpeness is a hidden gem that remains wonderfully timeless and a unique place for a Suffolk coast break.

Welcome to Thorpeness

With a fascinating history, Thorpeness is no ordinary Suffolk village. Nearly a century ago, the architect, barrister and playwright, Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie set about creating a safe and healthy, fun packed holiday environment for his family and friends. A place where children could enjoy the magic and innocence of a traditional seaside holiday. And from this idea the Suffolk holiday village of mock-Tudor buildings arose amongst the purple heather and golden gorse set back from the stunning unspoilt beach.

Outdoor Pursuits!

By the 1930s Thorpeness could boast some great outdoor pursuits! The Country Club had been built along with its 7 tennis courts making it then, and now, a vibrant tennis club with membership open to anyone...The Golf Club was completed making James Braid's 18-hole, 6241-yard heathland golf course one of the most challenging and welcoming in the area...And the hand dug Meare, which is only one metre deep but covers 64 acres, allows visitors to take out a boat to the many fantasy islands (based on the adventures of Peter Pan) and in August is home to the infamous Thorpeness Regatta!

Out and About

There is plenty to do nearby too. A brisk walk down the shoreline takes you to the legendary Aldeburgh, home of Benjamin Britten, the controversial "Shell" and some of the best fish and chips in the country. Snape Maltings not only offers some great retail therapy, but is home to the Snape Maltings concert hall which holds the annual Aldeburgh Festival, along with a year round programme of arts events. Further up the coast, visit Southwold and its pier, Walberswick with its amazing sandy beaches and grab your binoculars and visit the many RSPB reserves, all within easy travelling distance of Thorpeness.
